What-If Reports

What is the AAR?
The Academic Advisement Report (AAR) is an online interactive tool that will allow you to track your progress toward graduation and help with your enrollment planning. The report displays the academic requirements for your program of study and indicates whether you have completed those requirements. The report provides course details about the courses that are available and the courses already taken. You can add courses directly from the AAR into your planner and shopping cart.

Who can use the report?

As an enrolled Boise State undergraduate student or an undergraduate student that is eligible to enroll, you can run the AAR to check your degree progress. If you are in a non-degree seeking major or a pre-program a report may not be viewable. See Changing My Major and Running a What If Report for more information.

Will the report use transfer and test credit?

Equivalent transfer courses and test credits appear in the AAR just like Boise State courses. Non-equivalent transfer courses and test credits typically appear in the electives section of the AAR.

How do I know if a requirement HAS been satisfied?

Satisfied requirements will only list the requirement and not show any detail. If you expand the requirement by clicking on the green arrow on the left of the line, you will see that the requirement says “Satisfied” and the details will be shown. In-progress and repeat-in-progress courses will cause the requirement to show as “Not Satisfied” until they have been graded.

How do I know if a requirement has NOT been satisfied?

Unsatisfied requirements will say “Not Satisfied" and the details about what is needed to fulfill the requirement (such as what course(s) to take or the number of credit hours needed) will be displayed. In-progress and repeat-in-progress courses will show as unsatisfied until they have been graded.

What if a course I have taken is not being used to fulfill a requirement?

There may be several reasons why a particular course is not being used to fulfill a requirement:

  1. Grades -- core courses and upper division courses required by the major need a C- or higher to fulfill a requirement. Some departments may require a C or higher for all of their major requirements.
  2. Catalog -- courses that can be used to fulfill a requirement are subject to what catalog year you are using.
  3. Approval -- Some requirements require advisor approval to be submitted to the Registrar's Office.

If you expected a particular course to fulfill a requirement, and it has not, please contact a graduation evaluator degreeprogress@boisestate.edu or your advisor as soon as possible.

How does the AAR use courses that are in progress?

Courses that are not graded are considered to be "In Progress," and your AAR will use those courses to fulfill specific requirements. Because the AAR will use an "In Progress" course to fulfill a requirement, it is important to run your AAR after you drop or add courses and after your final grades are received.

In-progress courses are any that have not been graded. They appear on the report with a yellow diamond iconIn Progress. A requirement that has an in-progress course displayed in the requirement details will not be “Satisfied” until a finale grade has been received. Repeat-in-progress courses are indicated on the report with a yellow star iconRepeat. They are treated just like in-progress courses. Be aware that a repeat-in-progress course will not replace your original course until a grade has been received and a repeat code has been applied. Until that time both courses will show on the AAR and will affect your GPA and Total Credits.

What if I have an incomplete grade in a course?

Courses with a grade of incomplete are indicated on the report with a blue circle icon Incomplete.   Requirements that use courses with grades of incomplete will show as “Not Satisfied.” These will remain “ Not Satisfied” until a grade change has been submitted to the Registrar’s Office. If you do not complete the terms of the incomplete contract, an automatic "F" will be assigned. Grades of “F” are not listed on your AAR, even though they are reflected in your cumulative totals.

What if I am repeating a course?

Repeat-in-progress courses are indicated on the report with a yellow star iconRepeat. A requirement that has a repeat-in-progress course displayed in the requirement details will display as “Not Satisfied” until a finale grade has been received. Be aware that a repeat-in-progress course will not replace your original course until a grade has been received and a repeat code has been applied. Until that time both courses will show on the AAR and will affect your GPA and Total Credits.

What if a course I have taken is not showing on the AAR?

Courses that are not used to fulfill specific requirements appear at the end of your AAR in the "Electives" section. Unsuccessful attempts (courses with a grade of "F") are not listed on your AAR, even though they are reflected in your cumulative totals.

What if my academic adjustment is not reflected on the report?

If academic adjustments you have submitted do not appear on your AAR, it may be that they were not received by the Registrar’s Office or you have changed your major / minor or catalog year. Contact degreeprogress@boisestate.edu to have an evaluator review your file.

What if the requirements in the catalog don't match the report?

Check your catalog year at the top of the AAR. If this does not match the catalog you are using, you need to update your catalog information. Contact degreeprogress@boisestate.edu. Requirements on the AAR may be different from the printed catalog if curriculum changes were made by the department after the catalog went to print. For the most up-to-date catalog requirements, please see the online version of the catalog at http://registrar.boisestate.edu/catalogs/index.shtml.

Why is the report not showing the results I expected?

Major requirements are based on what catalog you are using to graduate under. The AAR will use the major, minor and catalog information that exists for you in my.BoiseState at the time you run the report. Check your AAR to see what catalog is listed. If this does not match the catalog you are using, you need to update your catalog information. Contact degreeprogress@boisestate.edu to update your catalog.

Additional reasons your AAR may be inaccurate:

  1. You are using a different catalog than is recorded for you in my.BoiseState.
  2. You have transfer credits, but your transcript has never been received or evaluated by Boise State.
  3. You've completed a qualifying Associate Degree to become Idaho core certified after being admitted to Boise State, but it hasn't yet been recorded on my.BoiseState.
  4. You've discussed transfer equivalencies with your advisor and department chair, but those equivalencies have never been formally recorded On my.BoiseState.
  5. You've discussed substitutions or waivers with your advisor and department chair, but have never submitted an Adjustment of Academic Requirements form to the Registrar's Office.
  6. You've had an Adjustment of Academic Requirements form approved, but you have changed your major or minor and the adjustment is no longer showing on your AAR.
  7. If you see any problems on your AAR, let your advisor know right away or email degreeprogress@boisestate.edu. Your AAR will not be accurate until the problems are resolved.

Why does a course in my planner show up twice on my what-if report?
If you have a course in the unassigned section of your planner, it will appear twice on your what-if report. Assign the class to a term in your planner to make the class appear only once on your what-if.

What is a What-If Report?

The What-if Report is an advising tool that allows you to see what your academic progress would look like based on the requirements for various academic scenarios such as: a different major, minor, or a double major. A What-if Report allows you to see these scenarios without having to change your major in my.BoiseState.

Another way you can utilize the What-if Report is to run it to see your academic progress based on the courses in your planner. Courses from your planner will appear on the report to give you an indication of how they would satisfy your program requirements once you have enrolled in them. Planner courses appear on the report with a blue star icon Planner.

What-if Courses can be added to the What-if Report. This feature allows you to enter any course from the course catalog and see how it would be used on the academic report. If you are interested in the course you can add it to your shopping cart or planner directly from the What-if Report. What-if Courses appear on the report with a question mark icon What-If.

If I am thinking about changing majors, can the AAR help me decide?

You can run a What-if Report to see how your coursework would apply to a different major or minor. You can run as many different majors or minors you choose without actually changing your declared major. Remember, after you have decided which major or minor you want to pursue, you need to change it on my.BoiseState by accessing the "Change Major" link.
